Subgroup B: Assignment 2 (pturne6, nhaywo2, awalker2, aordone2, kwulfso2)

(Founder Evangelist Mattie P. Dawson)
(Intro & Background) Elogeme Adolphi Christian Sorority, Berakah Chapter, is a Christian sorority here at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.  This sorority was established in 1987, with many chapters across the nation, including the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Berakah Chapter which was established in 1995. According to www.elogemeadolphi.org, the goal of the sorority is “to promote unity, teach spiritual discipline, and prepare young women to operate effectively in the body of Christ.”  As you can tell, this is not your average sorority, rather a combination of sisterhood, academics, and Christian values. The picture to the left is Mattie P. Dawson, one of the sororities founding members. According to www.elogemeadolphi.org, Dawson was accompanied by Denise R. Haynes and Judy Hendricks when founding the Elogeme Adolphi Christian Sorority.

(Membership Requirements)  According to www.elogemeadolphi.org, the membership requirements are: “must be saved according to the Holy Scriptures… must be in good standings at an accredited institution… must have and maintain a minimum GPA of a 2.5… can not belong to another sorority or other little sister… must pay module fee/annual membership dues… must complete a profile, interview and cornerstone module process.” Each member of the sorority must abide by these rules in order to maintain their membership. When it comes to becoming a memeber, according to the  www.elogeadolphi.org, anyone who meets the requirements, goes through an interview and willing to fulfill their obligations can join. In the above picture, found at www.elogemeadolphi.org, these are The Daughters of Issachar chapter and the newest to join the Elogeme Adolphi family. This picture fits into the membership section, because these women have pledged to fulfill and maintain the membership requirements of the sorority.

(Trends & Issues) One of the major events that the Elogeme sorority members participate in is their annual national summit.  These National meetings are held yearly and chapters from different universities from all across the country attend each year.  Some of these universities include Illinois state university, Northern Illinois, University of Illinois, Bethune Cookman (Florida), and Southern University (Louisiana).  These meetings help these young women not only to grow spiritually, but socially and mentally as well.  This year's summit will be held from July 21-24 at Southern Illinois University in Carbondale, Illinois. This information was obtained from the sorority’s website, www.elogemeaadolphi.org. In the photograph above, these are sisters pictured at the 2009 summit.

Foot Washing Ceremony

(Leisure & Benefits) According to a member of Elogeme Adolphi, the women of the sorority engage in a ceremony called foot washing.  Foot washing is a ceremony that was performed in the bible between Jesus and his Disciples where the master washes the feet of the servant to send the message that you should do on to another what he did unto them.  I believe that for the women of Elogeme, the foot washing ceremony is a form of spiritual and therapeutic recreation.

(Summary) Through the help of a sorority sister and the national website, www.elogemeadolphi.org, we were able to obtain and learn a lot of valuable information about the Elogeme Adolphi Christian Sorority. While this may be a relatively young sorority, it is a sorority that is growing quickly, with new chapters joining each year. While, this sorority requires a lot of commitment and work from its members, many of the members do not feel as though it is work. Rather, the members want to fulfill the requirements and commit themselves to their religion and the sisterhood. Overall, our group obtained a better understanding of what the sorority stands for, accomplishes and how members feel that their membership fulfills leisure.
